Psalm 8 and Matthew 28:16-20

Having remembered and celebrated once again God’s gift of God’s own self in the Holy Spirit coming upon Jesus first disciples and the earliest Christians on Pentecost nearly 2,000 years ago, our cycle of Christian worship now moves into the “Ordinary Time” that makes up the rest of the year. First, though, we pause for a celebration of how God reveals God’s own self to us as “triune”—as one God, yet three “persons”.

In the focus scripture for our worship this week, we’ll hear Jesus commissioning his earliest disciples to go and make more disciples, baptizing them into the fullness of that “triune” mystery. Talk of the “Trinity” can feel heady and esoteric, but the reality of God’s mystery and majesty as Trinity is something that continually invites us in, welcoming us into a holy dance that wraps us up into something larger than ourselves and sends us out to witness to something that is far more than we could ever ask or imagine. Thanks be to God!

Please also note that the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper, Holy Communion, will be celebrated this Sunday instead of next week on June 7th, due to our pastors being away at the Annual Meeting of the Pacific Mountain Regional Council of The United Church of Canada. (The June 7 worship service will be led by lay leaders from our congregation’s United Church Women unit, and CUC member and Church Council chair Daniel Ariss will be offering the sermon.)
