The Day of Pentecost: "Up, Up… and Away?"
This week we celebrate “a pioneer Pentecost.” Truth be told, we don’t have a lot of detailed information on what worship services looked like among our ancestor generations who first gathered as the faith communities that would become Cloverdale United Church, but as our community celebrates the annual Cloverdale Rodeo, we’ll give a nod in our worship service to Cloverdale’s small western “cowboy” farm town heritage. On this Sunday on which we also celebrate the annual Christian festival of Pentecost—the pouring out of the Holy Spirit on Jesus’ first disciples and the birth of what would become the Christian church—our worship will sway and dance and sing with the movement of the Spirit among us, accompanied by our own home-grown ensemble of folk/bluegrass/gospel-style musical leadership. We’ll also celebrate the Spirit’s irresistible work of calling followers of Jesus as we welcome a group of new members into covenant with our congregation. As you feel moved, you are invited and encouraged to wear your best “rodeo” outfit to worship this week!
