"Gotta Serve Somebody"
As he entered into his more gospel-oriented phase, the US folk singer-songwriter Bob Dylan famously sang “you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed, You’re gonna have to serve somebody. Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord, but you’re gonna have to serve somebody.” Dylan was by far not the first to name the reality that all of us end up living out of our conscious or unconscious allegiances to someone or something. In this Sunday’s focus scripture from the book of Joshua, Joshua—who took over leadership of the Hebrew peoples after Moses' death as they settled back into the so-called Promised Land following their enslavement in Egypt and their wandering in the wilderness—invites the people to make a conscious choice and commitment to choose whom they will serve. In our own lives, we are still presented with the invitation to make an intentional choice of who we will serve and where we will place our trust.
