20th Sunday after Pentecost (Thanksgiving Sunday)

In October, we continue our walk alongside Jesus as told by the gospel of Mark, as he journeys from his transfiguration to his triumphal entry into Jerusalem before his crucifixion. Along this journey, Jesus teaches about the nature of true discipleship. It is based on a life contrary to the perspectives and priorities of the world. It is living into a life more in line with the kingdom of God, a kingdom that seeks to turn our world upside down.

This week, a rich man comes to ask Jesus what he should do to inherit eternal life. He is a good man, and sincere in his asking. Mark's gospel is alone in saying that Jesus looked on him and loved him. Out of love, not as judgment, Jesus offers him an open door to life: sell all you won and give it to the poor. Our culture bombards us with the message that we will find life by consuming. The life of the Christian assembly, though, counters this message with the invitation to find life by divesting for the sake of the other.

The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper, Holy Communion:  Due to Rev. Matt's unexpectedly having to participate in worship remotely last Sunday, we postponed last Sunday's celebration of Holy Communion and will be sharing in the sacrament this coming Sunday instead. For those joining in worship via online methods, you will want to have prepared a piece of bread and a cup of wine/juice in order to participate in Holy Communion together with the in-person worshippers.
